Executive brief

What matters this edition

  • Communityr/GeminiAI users report Google's new Gemini 4 Argon is rolling out to paid subscribers, but some say it vanished from the model picker after they upgraded, and others complain it burns through hourly usage caps fast.
  • Communityr/codex users say GPT-6.1 Sol is cheaper on paper but much slower in practice, with one benchmark chart showing it at 22.3 tokens per second versus 168.1 for GPT-5.6 Sol in fast mode.
  • Communityr/LocalLLM and r/LocalLLaMA users are excited that Alibaba's open-weight Qwen3.8 27B runs at about 20 tokens per second on a jailbroken PlayStation 5, though some note the compressed version used is low quality.
  • Communityr/Anthropic users are skeptical of Anthropic's claim that small self-replicating models are months away, pointing out the demo ran at under one token per second and calling it more marketing than threat.
  • NewsGoogle's Gemini 4 Argon is rolling out in the Gemini app and Antigravity for paying subscribers, with developers getting 50 percent off API rates through November.
  • NewsAnthropic says its code changes merged per day grew from about 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September, prompting it to build a custom alternative to Git.

OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol trades speed for cost, which may suit batch work but frustrates users who need fast responses. Google's Gemini 4 Argon rollout is limited to paid tiers, and early users report inconsistent access and heavy usage consumption. Anthropic's internal code volume surge shows how AI coding tools are changing software development at scale.

Model benchmarks

How today’s models compare

Speed is in tokens per second — roughly words per second. The hosted chat apps most people use run at about 50-70 tokens per second; anything much slower feels sluggish, anything faster feels instant. "At home" means on a personal machine with the model downloaded; "Cloud" means the vendor's own service.

Open weights means anyone can download the model file and run or modify it on their own hardware; closed weights means the model is only reachable through the vendor's own cloud API or app — you never hold the model itself.

Commercially available home hardware tops out at around 256GB of usable memory (for example a dual DGX Spark setup or a large Mac Studio); an open-weight model bigger than that is realistically only usable through a reseller or a datacentre.

Redesigning source control at Anthropic

13 October 2026 · today

third party report

Anthropic described why it built a custom alternative to Git after its rate of code changes exploded. In May 2026 it averaged about 2,500 merged changes per day; by September that exceeded 30,000 per day. The so-what for business readers is that AI-assisted development is straining standard engineering tools, and companies may need to rethink their own development infrastructure as AI writes more of their code.

llm-gemini 0.35

13 October 2026 · today

third party report

A developer tool called llm-gemini added support for Google's new Gemini 4 Argon model, which became available through the Gemini API and for customers on Google's $100 per month subscription plan. The so-what is that paying subscribers and developers can now access Google's newest model, though the tool itself is a minor update for existing users.

Quoting Geoffrey Huntley

13 October 2026 · today

third party report

A developer quoted by Simon Willison describes using a pre-commit check to stop AI coding agents from bypassing a company's diagnostics library. When the agent tries to call observability modules directly, the commit fails and a prompt tells it to use the right library instead. The so-what is a practical technique for keeping AI-written code consistent with internal standards.

12 October 2026 · yesterday

third party report

Meta released Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, described as its new most capable models. Artificial Analysis scores Muse Wonder Max as equivalent to leading rivals. The so-what is that Meta is competing at the top tier of AI models, giving businesses another option for demanding tasks, though pricing and availability details are not yet clear.

Cerebras CEO says we’re nearing a future where everyone has a personal AI assistant at home

13 October 2026 · today

third party report

Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman predicts that personal AI assistants will become as common as household appliances, running partly on local devices and partly in the cloud. The so-what is a vision of AI moving from data centers into homes, which could reshape consumer hardware and cloud demand, though it is a prediction rather than a product announcement.

Industrial Next wants factory robots to switch tasks in minutes, not weeks

13 October 2026 · today

third party report

Industrial Next helps manufacturers automate complex, delicate tasks that have traditionally required human labor, aiming to let factory robots switch tasks in minutes rather than weeks. The so-what is more flexible automation for factories, potentially reducing downtime and retraining costs, though details on deployment or customers are not provided.
