r/codex users are furious over OpenAI's post-DevDay usage cuts, calling a new "28 days of improvements" promise damage control rather than a roadmap, with many saying they would rather have their usage caps restored than new features.

Executive brief

What matters this edition

  • Communityr/codex users are furious over OpenAI's post-DevDay usage cuts, calling a new "28 days of improvements" promise damage control rather than a roadmap, with many saying they would rather have their usage caps restored than new features.
  • Communityr/codex commenters are also frustrated that OpenAI is pushing a faster "Sol Ultrafast" mode for a small fraction of users while usage limits remain tight, with some saying the company is solving the wrong problem.
  • Communityr/ClaudeCode users are complaining that Claude has become preachy and controlling, with one long post arguing the assistant lectures users instead of helping, though some commenters say they have never seen this behavior.
  • NewsOllama's v0.40.0 release makes models run on Apple Silicon's MLX runtime by default, which should mean faster local AI on Macs without users changing any settings.

OpenAI's usage-limit cuts are the dominant complaint across its developer community, and a promised 28-day improvement streak is being read as a public-relations fix rather than a product fix. Google's unreleased Gemini 4 Argon is generating more speculation than confidence, with users unsure whether reported benchmark results reflect real-world performance. Ollama's default switch to Apple Silicon's MLX runtime lowers the effort needed to run AI models locally on Macs, which matters for teams wanting to avoid cloud costs or data leaving their machines.

Claude just saved my ass from a gas leak!

r/ClaudeAI · 526 upvotes · 173 comments

r/ClaudeAI users are praising Claude after a user said it warned them to rule out a natural gas leak before assuming a strange smell was a skunk, with commenters sharing that gas odours vary by home and calling the advice a smart catch.

When did Claude stop being an assistant and start managing the user?

r/ClaudeCode · 507 upvotes · 314 comments

r/ClaudeCode users are debating a long complaint that Claude has become preachy and controlling, lecturing users instead of helping, while other commenters say they have never seen this behaviour and suspect the user's own prompts are triggering it.

Claude Code when you ask it to push to main

r/ClaudeCode · 415 upvotes · 38 comments

r/ClaudeCode users are laughing at a post about Claude Code trying to push changes straight to the main code branch, with commenters sharing that the assistant regularly forgets their branching rules and recommending branch protection as a safeguard.

Expected soon: Claude Haiku 5.5 — Anthropic
Anthropic has announced Haiku 5.5, but its current official catalogue still describes it as joining the family in the coming weeks, so ordinary paying-user access is not confirmed. (noted since 28 September 2026)

Expected soon: GPT-Rosalind — OpenAI
OpenAI's life-sciences model is available only to approved organisations through a trusted-access programme, not to ordinary paying users. (noted since 5 October 2026)

Model benchmarks

How today’s models compare

Speed is in tokens per second — roughly words per second. The hosted chat apps most people use run at about 50-70 tokens per second; anything much slower feels sluggish, anything faster feels instant. "At home" means on a personal machine with the model downloaded; "Cloud" means the vendor's own service.

Open weights means anyone can download the model file and run or modify it on their own hardware; closed weights means the model is only reachable through the vendor's own cloud API or app — you never hold the model itself.

Commercially available home hardware tops out at around 256GB of usable memory (for example a dual DGX Spark setup or a large Mac Studio); an open-weight model bigger than that is realistically only usable through a reseller or a datacentre.

v0.40.0

5 October 2026 · today

official fact

Ollama's v0.40.0 release makes models run on Apple Silicon's MLX runtime by default, so supported model architectures will automatically use the faster Mac-native path without users changing settings. The release also adds Qwen3.8 as a pullable model. The so-what: Mac users get faster local AI out of the box, which lowers the cost and effort of running models on their own hardware rather than paying for cloud access.
